Known for beautifully written lyrics that are at once poetic and socially engaged, El Morabba3’s post-rock sound features soaring guitar lines with no-frills vocals and deft rhythms. The quarter tones of Arabic music and the occasional tabla appearance, all bathed in delicate electronic layering, complete the band’s soundscape with a subtle bittersweet feel that intensely captures the inherited realities of a generation. The Jordan-based group formed in 2009 as an Arab rock band. In July 2012 they released a debut album, titled El Morabba3 (the square), that firmly cemented their status as a hugely popular act in the region. As they gear up for their sophomore album release in 2015, the band’s three musicians have been exploring richer instrumentation and orchestrations with the addition of a string section, a trumpet and more pronounced electronic loops, playbacks, keys and synth bass. From Brussels and Cairo to Dubai and back to their hometown Amman, the band’s fan base has been steadily on the rise with every live performance. Most recently, they appeared in front of thousands of fans as part of SoundClash. El Morabba3 is: Songwriter Muhammad Abdullah (bass, vocals). Producer Odai Shawagfeh (electric guitar, keys/synth). Cameraman and director Dirar Shawagfeh (drums).
