Campaign successfully funded on: 17 Jun,2014
According to the recent findings of The Arab Thought Foundation, an Arab individual reads an average of a quarter of a page per year. Shocking, right?
That's what we thought too!
At first we surveyed 550 university students and young professionals residing in Tripoli about their reading habits and visiting cafes.
The most relevant findings indicated that nearly 70% of the educated youth read less than a book per year. Yet 44% indicated that they probably would read more if they were part of a reading community/club or received guidance on which books to choose and had easier access to them.
And this is why we decided to launch Alkindy - a cultural social space (named after the 'Philosopher of the Arabs' - Wikipedia) in Tripoli, Lebanon.
The space will include 4 main sections:
- A small library and a bookshop
-Study rooms or private reading rooms
- A meeting room
- A cafe or a social space
Alkindy is not merely a location. The space will regularly organize and host cultural and social events.
Being a Member at Alkindy will entitle you to the following:
1- Access to Alkindy's library. Renting capacity: up to 4 books at a time.
2- Free Wifi while enjoying the vibrant environment at Alkindy
3- 10% Discount at Alkindy's Cafe
4- Free access to one event per month. Selected by the member
5- Access to the meeting room upon reservation: Twice per month
Through our presence at Tripoli Book Fair we were able to attract nearly 600 interested individuals that contributed offline to the campaign and lots of community support. The enthusiasm for this project is fairly translated on the Facebook page we recently launched - second week of April: https://www.facebook.com/alkindytripoli

What We Need
We need $55,000 for the first year of operations.
Through Zoomaal we're asking for $25,000. the money will cover:
- One year rent for the location
- Equipping the space
- Miscellaneous expenses such as the campaign fees.
If we don't reach our entire goal, Zoomaal will return the money to the contributors!
Alkindy will not only provide a space for youth to gather, share ideas and enjoy reading, but also it will create a cultural hub in the city by the youth for the youth. The space will regularly organize and host cultural and social events. Our strategy is to partner with most of the existing initiatives. Current partners include We love Tripoli – Cultural club, Tripoli Entrepreneurs Club and TEDxAzmiStreet.
Supporting Alkindy will help us socially and culturally empower the youth to be stronger informed change agents.
If you can't contribute financially yet you believe in the impact that Alkindy might have, you can still support the project in many ways:1- Spread the word about Alkindy. Tell people about it, show them the video and be our Ambassador.
