DIGITAL MARRAKECH, an international media arts and digital festival, which aims to present diverse trends and practices in the fields of digital film & video, multimedia performances, Video installations, digital mapping, net art, workshops and other interdisciplinary forms
In the festival framework artists from all over the world present latest practices, research and technologies and showcase important achievements in the development of media arts practices.
It is also a platform for local artists to present their work to a much larger public and to critic reviews. The festival plays a major role in expanding the opportunities for local talented film, video and interactive media artists, and offers the best of them the opportunity to produce a new works by offering two weeks master classes under the supervision of Media Arts professionals.
The structure of Digital Marrakech (in its entirety) contributes to the development of creative work by; providing rare training opportunities (All the year) by some of the worlds leading cutting edge digital artists that help to develop the skills/interest of new and emerging local artists; facilitating the production of works resulting from workshops and masterclasses and their distribution; and finally facilitates cultural exchange by both exposing local artists to work by international artists in the annual Festival and vice-versa. A number of collaborative projects between North African and European artists have resulted from Digital Marrakech projects.
In short, Digital Marrakech supports the development of contemporary art representations via digital cinema, video art, performances and other digital art forms, within Morocco and the Arab the region and exposes local artists to a wider arts community. Unlike any other digital arts event in the region, Digital Marrakech events offer unique opportunities for local artists to both develop their skills and creativity as well as be exposed to and have their work exposed to a much broader arts community.
* Create a space for new and emerging artists to develop, explore and experiment with tools and ideas to help strengthen the development of diverse forms of expression and to encourage digital and media art creation in Morocco, North Africa and more broadly, the Arab world.
*Provide a program for young mixed media artists from various fields and initiate international and regional networks among the participants. By bringing together artists from diverse cultural and creative backgrounds, we aim to facilitate cultural exchange that we believe broadens and enriches creativity and experimentation and inspires innovative forms of expression
* By facilitating cultural exchange we also aim to broaden cultural understanding between the collaborating artists in order to deepen understanding of the cultural context that often informs some of the narrative, aesthetic and other elements of digital and media artwork. We also aim to diversify the "Western perspective" on art from the Arab world and acquaint the West with Arab artists. By facilitating the production, distribution and circulation of work from young Arab artists we aim to challenge some of the prevalent negative stereotypes of Arabs that dominate some western media outlets and show the diversity and pluralism that exists within the Arab world.
* Develop the skills of new and emerging artists through the workshops and masterclasses held throughout the year. By bringing together new and emerging talent with established artists we aim to develop skills and understanding of creative media arts practice for the former. By strengthening the skill set and understanding of digital artwork among new and emerging artists we aim to encourage the development of innovative, brave, open and creative digital and media artwork with the ultimate aim of creating positive change in a given community and beyond.
*Encourage personal transformation and more broadly, social change through video, digital film-making and mixed media art creation. Our vision is to create a space where art constitutes an integral and visible part of everyday in Moroccan life. It endeavors to render arts a vital means that contributes to the mobility of people by inciting them to act, create and participate towards creativity and cultural production. Our work is aimed at building a society in which culture and arts can motivate individuals and communities to open up to other cultures and societies. It also endeavors to create a community that encourages an aesthetic environment that enables its individuals to achieve their artistic ambitions.
Digital Marrakech Platform believes that the encouragement of creative expression within our region will open the doors to a wide range of experimentation and rich artistic events throughout the year, which, therefore will contribute to the general development of media arts in the region.
The majority of the population is young (roughly 70%), and young people in the Morocco are reclaiming their right to express themselves in different ways.
Media arts are playing an increasingly important role for this young generation to openly, freely and creatively express themselves. Our vision is to bolster this growing sector in morocco.
