“All the disorders, all the wars which we see in the world, only occur because of the neglect to learn music.”- Molière
My name is May Nasr. I'm a musician who passionately believes in the power of music, especially our folk songs, in bringing peace to our people. For this purpose, I established the Children's Choir project through my NGO Partners We Are in Lebanon (PartnersLebanon). PartnersLebanon applies conflict mediation and reconciliation tools to restore war-inflicted social divides, re-inject the historical memory of our heritage, and cultivate a sense of unity and belonging in the Lebanese communities. I am campaigning here to raise funds to help cover our concert costs on February 23, 2019.
Our Children's Choir is a twelve-month project funded by Drosos Foundation (Switzerland) and was kick-started in April 2018. In partnership with ALPHA, our project works with over 100 children and youth of disadvantaged Lebanese communities, including those of existing refugee communities residing in Beirut; those who have no access to free, safe and nurturing extra-curricular activities.
Our children and youth are being trained by music experts to sing together folk songs that they and their communities fondly share; where the prejudice and hatred typically exchanged between them on the streets are overcome by the creation of bonds and new friendships through this project. These kids have never sung before. They never dreamed they would be standing onstage and singing to the public! Only five months into their training, 30 out of the total 100 kids joined me at the AUB Concert on October 21, 2018 and the entire crowd of audience was in tears!
In parallel, the mothers of these children and youth receive Mental Health and Mindfulness training sessions by a psycho-corporal art training expert who introduces them to a number of mindful well-being techniques, physical and mental exercises, and a healthier food style, all of which allow them to practice a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
On February 23rd, 2019, the project’s final concert event for its twelve-month term will take place at The Palace Theatre, ARESCO Tower, in Hamra, Beirut. Our 100 diverse children and youth choir will perform together accompanied by a number of well-respected musicians in support of the continuity of the project. A final documentary film will present the project’s phases, testimonies by the children, youth, the mothers, expert trainers, staff and volunteers who will talk about the powerful impact the project has made in their lives, demonstrating the need to continue to build on this initiative in order to replicate it across Lebanon where social and cultural divide conflicts exist.
The minimum we need to cover our concert's costs is $7000.
Here's the official concert announcement!
