This project has not been successfully funded. Sorry!

Feeling lost and don't know what all of this is about?

What is the project about

Women in between: Love, Honor and Shame - is a web interactive documentary, a virtual journey in the Mediterranean region to explore stories of women that have been victims of violence and social exclusion but yet have found the strength to struggle for empowerment. Their stories will set an example for others that have been victims of a culture based on honor and shame. The honor of the family, the feeling of shame, the social exclusion all leading to violent acts against women and in between love, love for oneself and being in love. The personal stories of women will bring to light broader issues of economic crisis, immigration, domestic violence, femicide, social exclusion, family shame, forbidden abortions, arranged marriages and ostracized single mothers.

Stories of women in form of short documentaries, photo-reportage's, animation and multimedia videos, will be presented in a web interactive documentary, where the viewer will be able to navigate in the Mediterranean Sea –through interactive maps and features - and reflect on issues of violence and empowerment presented on six chapters. Each chapter refers to one of the six countries through which we will travel to –Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and Spain. A virtual dialogue of Women in Between bordered countries. At the end of this virtual journey one will have the possibility to act and participate in a more meaningful way against violence. A live mapping of the local and international groups and NGO's who work on women rights and gender-based violence would give the possibility to women who seek help and also to every viewer who wants to become more involved to find the nearest group and/or action in his/her region.

Woman in Kairouane, Tunisia - 2011

New media and interactive technologies is nowadays being used widely in journalism and documentary, in order to reach wider audience and create greater impact on social issues. We decided to use this distribution channel because we believe that information and education are two very important factors on the fight against violence. We want to reach wider audience and engage it- especially younger people- in a participatory way. Our aim is not only to inform but also to call for reflection, personal involvement and finally action against violence. This new media narrations can be used effectively to any campaign, educational course, lecture, seminar etc. related to these topics. The web platform will be designed to work in low connections and launched under Creative Commons license so that anyone may have access to its content and permission to share with others.

Who we are

This project was initially the idea of the Italian photographer [Francesca Oggiano]
and the Greek director [Georgia Tsismetzoglou] who share the same ambition, yet the team has grown rapidly and led to the creation of the Maboula Collective, a cultural association with horizontal structure. 'Women in Between' is our first collaborative project in partnership with the Italian NGO "COSPE-together for change" who will provide us technical support.

Why we ask for your support

We launch this campaign in order to cover production costs such as: translation, travel, web design and web hosting costs of the prototype platform and the audiovisual chapter of Women in Between in Tunisia. The Tunisian chapter will be shot in three rural areas: El Kef, Jendouba North Tunisia and Kasserine west-central Tunisia close to Jbel Ch3mbi (Chaambi’s mountain). The content will present the woman’s conditions in rural areas related to:

- facilitate access to gynecologic clinics to prevent pregnancies, abortion, and medical treatment for women  (Kasserine).

-  single mothers in rural areas

-  domestic violence

-  stories of women empowerment

What we have accomplished so far

We have been working on this project for the past 2 years by our own means. We have finished the screenplay and written a presentation of the project. In 2014 we received a travel grand from the European cultural foundation to travel to Tunisia, which permitted us to conduct field investigation, establish partnerships with local groups and associations and start filming in the province of el Kef. During our field investigation we met Chiraz and Wahida who accepted to share their stories with us.

Chiraz moved to el Kef when her family isolated her for being a single mother of 2 children. There she met Wassila and other women of the Chrichi community who supported her during this difficult period of her life.

Wahida lives in Kasserine and opened the first craft shop with products made by women of the area. A space where women can meet, share their problems, work together, participate in workshops and seminars.

Chiraz - Chrichi community, el Kef, Tunisia - 2014

We are currently developing partnerships with local and international groups and NGO's who will provide us with technical support and contacts with local communities in all six countries and a financial plan to meet our objectives. The Tunisian cartoonist Nadia Kiari (author of the Willis from Tunis) has agreed to produce the animations related to the Tunisian chapter of the project.

The success of this crowd funding campaign will enable us to continue the production of the Tunisian chapter and also design and launch a prototype of the Web Interactive Platform, which will allow us to gain insight by the users' feedback in order to improve the prototype and release the final version. The feedback of the users will be used in the final design of the platform. We count on your feedback not only for this campaign but also for the social issues this project represents. We want you to be part of this project in all possible ways.

By definition a shelter is a structure that provides protection from danger, but for some women a shelter is the bond between them that makes them feel protected!

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH THE FUNDS?

Women in Between is an ambitious project and we truly believe that it cannot be accompliced without your support. The travel expenses in 6 countries and the costs for the production and hosting of the web interactive platform are prohibitive for us. It is a project addressed to all people and therefore we want to turn to the people to support its first steps and embark with us towards our final destination. All donations made will go to the production of Women in Between and not a penny will go unspent or be spent elsewhere.

Help us reach our total goal and help us give voice to more women.

With 18.000$ we will cover our travel, production and translation costs for 6 months and also the costs for the design and hosting of the Interactive Web Platform Prototype with the complete chapter of Tunisia [documentaries, photography, animated videos, graphics and multimedia videos].

If you help us reach the milestone of 10.000$ your contribution would still be very valuable to us since we will be able to cover production, animation, web design, translation and travel costs for 6 months in order to finish the production of the entire Tunisian chapter and present the stories of women through documentaries, photo-reportages, animated videos, graphics and multimedia videos on a professional Website that will run online as a prototype presentation of the web platform of the project.

If you help us reach the milestone of 6.000$ we will be very thankful since we will be able to finish the shootings for the Tunisian chapter and present the stories of women through documentaries and photo-reportages on a professional Website that will run online as a prototype presentation of the web platform of the project. This will cover the production, web design, translation and travel costs in Tunisia for 6 months.

Any donation or share from you can make this project real.

Donate and join us on this journey!

All contributions will be rewarded! Please check out the donation tiers on the right!

All tiers will be designed from the Twiza collective. Twiza is a cultural open space in the heart of the Medina in Tunis, where local and international activists and artists meet and share their experience with the local community through cultural events and workshops.

Don't wait: make a pledge today and be part of this journey!

Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference since any dollar you donate will be doubled thanks to Zoomal and Hivos.

The Impact

If only in the European Union, over one in five women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner. If only over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides. If only the rates of domestic violence have increased greatly during the time of crisis. If only austerity measures led to public budget cuts leaving women victims of violence or single mothers unable to provide for their children anymore, more vulnerable than before. What if we could turn those numbers to actual voices? What tools can we, as artists, provide on the fight to eliminate violence against women?

The web documentary [Women in Between] was born from those questions. Reading news and reports related to violence against women we identified the need for education, advocacy and action on the issue. The need for audiovisual material, presented in one place, of several topics related to women rights violations in a specific region, like the Mediterranean, and not only on a case by case presentation. A need to create an audiovisual tool that could be used effectively to any campaign, educational course, lecture, seminar etc. related to these topics. But mostly a need to find a way to engage the audience in a more participatory way.

"Send a postcard to end violence against women" a campaign to raise awareness by maboula collective
On social media share the postcards, tag people on them be part of the debate on ‪#‎womeninbetween‬ on how to end ‪#‎ViolenceAgainstWomen‬. For the next 7 days we will upload a new one everyday.  As we are only a week away from 25th of November - International day for the elimination of violence against women- we launch this campaign in order to invite everyone to reflect on violence and participate in the debate on how to end it. When we speak about violence against women we relate it mostly to physical, sexual violence, but violence has a lot more masks. It can also be psychological or in form of sexual and cyber harassment to name a few. We need to unveil all of those masks if we want to defeat it. The questions posed in the postcards have been isolated from the questionnaire of the FRA-EUROPE survey on violence against women that was contacted in 2014 and the results are alarming. We are aware that those questions may not stand alone as violent cases or draw results from the answers but we believe that they can set the base for a broader reflection and discussion on how violence is present in our everyday life in more ways than anyone can imagine.
